Mewgenics is an upcoming tactical role-playing roguelike life simulation game video game created by indie game developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel. The soundtrack was performed by RIDICULON. The game revolves around the player moving into Boon County and raising a lineage of cats, as they send their cats out on sprawling adventures throughout the world.

Gameplay

Gameplay in Mewgenics is centered around the player taking care of their cats. As the game progresses, cats may gain mutations, curses, diseases and other afflictions that may alter their condition for the better or for the worse, such as a mutation that makes a cat able to walk on water. These afflictions may or may not be passed down to said cat's bloodline, resulting in their offspring also bearing said affliction. At the start of the game, players get to choose a starting cat before the game commences. Afterwards, stray cats can be occasionally found roaming in the vicinity of the player's home and if dragged inside, can be bred with the starter cat.[1][2] However, players should pay attention

While the player is inside their home, the game puts a greater emphasis on the life-simulation elements. Players in this stage possess a multitude of activities they can partake in, such as observing their cats, managing their inventory, redecorating the home with Furniture and interacting with the various NPCs such as Frank, who can upgrade the player's home. While in this mode, players can listen to the radio station WMEW 99.9 which plays unique music that can be unlocked as the player progresses through the game.

Adventuring is the second scenario in the game and the one the player is likely going to spend a majority of their time on. Each adventure in Mewgenics is comprised of 3 chapters. A chapter is an area containing exclusive enemies, mini-bosses and bosses. WIP!

Synopsis

Development

Mewgenics experienced a notably long development cycle, having been initially announced in 2012, then put on hold in August of 2014 and confirmed to have been cancelled in 2016. In January of 2018, Edmund confirmed he had secured the rights to the game, at which point he announced he was resuming and restarting development of the game with Tyler Glaiel as his collaborator. In 2020, the game's final design would be pinned down, with the game now a tactical role-playing game mixed with roguelike and life simulation aspects. In Halloween of 2022, the Steam page for the game was officially launched and in March of 2024 it would update with new screenshots.

In 2024, Tyler Glaiel would comment on the state of the prototype. According to him, the prototype was "in pieces" that were never connected, with the "pieces" themselves being very unfinished and that "nobody knows how it actually played".
